Shall I Compare Thee to an (almost) Summer’s Day?

Friday, June 5th, 2020

Howdy, folks! Hummingbird here! Do you feel that?!?! That beautiful breeze…. that sun shining down from high in the sky…. that tiny itch of llama wool blowing by as Otis gets his ceremonial haircut! It can mean but one thing….. summer is a’comin’!

The end of the school year is visible, and there’s been a lot going on in the world recently. So in this moment of transition, here are a few journal prompts and conversation starters to use at home! Start a conversation with family and friends, or jot your thoughts down in a notebook or journal.

What makes someone a leader? What kind of leader do you want to be?

Think back to a time when you saw something you knew was wrong. How did you react? If you could go back to that moment, how would you act now?

Think of someone you look up to (an adult, a peer, a celebrity, family member, politician, or artist). What do you value about them? How do they inspire you to be the best version of yourself?

Is there a place in the world where you feel most at home? Where is it, and what about it makes you feel so comfortable?

If you could change one thing about the city/town you live in, what would it be?

What does justice mean to you?

If you had a social media account with one million followers, what would you use it to say?

If you asked your friends what they love about you, what do you think they would say?

If you could design your ideal city to live in, what would it be like?

Mr. Rogers once said, “When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, ‘Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.” In what ways, big and small, do you help others?

When you feel overwhelmed, who do you count on? What do they do to help? How do you thank them?

When you look around at your school, what do you see that you like? What do you see that you want to change?

We here in the Valley are feeling super grateful for our camp family these days– from the llamas to the lake fish, to Hamilton the pig, and of course to all our wonderful campers and staff, wherever you are! We are so glad you’re part of our HVC community! Reach out with questions or more journal prompt ideas! And keeping tuning into our Instagram account @Hidden_Valley_Camp_Maine, where we’ll be posting resources, activities, and ideas all summer long!

I’m off answer some of these questions myself! Do you have any pens I could hold in my wing?? No?! Oh well, I’ll go start a conversation with Hamilton instead!

Chirp chirp!
Hummingbird
